Sunbonnet Sue to the rescue!

The Sunbonnet Sue quilt pattern is a classic and reminds me of my younger days. This cutter quilt I found was in pretty good shape and I was able to save several blocks. Whoever did the embroidery did a awesome job!

There is something so nostalgic about the Sunbonnet Sue pattern. Those sweet little girls in their big bonnets take me right back to my grandmother's sewing room, where quilts like this one were draped over every chair and bed.

I found this cutter quilt at an estate sale and immediately fell in love. A cutter quilt is one that is too worn or damaged to be used as a whole quilt, but still has blocks worth saving. This one was in surprisingly good shape — most of the Sunbonnet Sue blocks were intact and the embroidery was absolutely beautiful.

Whoever stitched those little bonnets and aprons really knew what they were doing. The satin stitch on the dresses is so even and precise, and the French knots used for the flower details are tiny and perfect. It is the kind of handwork that takes real patience and skill.

I carefully cut out the best blocks and gave them new life. Some became framed pieces, others were incorporated into new projects. Rescuing a cutter quilt always feels like a little act of preservation — keeping someone's handwork alive and appreciated for another generation.

If you ever come across a cutter quilt at a thrift store or estate sale, do not pass it by! Even the most worn quilts often have hidden treasures worth saving. Look for blocks with strong embroidery, interesting fabrics, or unusual patterns. You might be surprised what you find.
